1739‐1823 A general during the French Revolution. After serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Girondist cabinet in 1792, he became commander of the Army of the North. He won the battles of Valmy and Jemappes, and briefly invaded Belgium and the Netherlands, but was defeated in March 1793, drawing criticism from the Jacobins. As a result, he conspired with the enemy and plotted to march on Paris in an attempt to overthrow the National Convention. However, this failed, and he surrendered to the Austrian army in April 1793. He died in exile in London. [Koi Takashi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
