A general during the French Revolution. After serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Girondist cabinet in 1792, he became commander of the Army of the North. He won the battles of Valmy and Jemappes, and briefly invaded Belgium and the Netherlands, but was defeated in March 1793, drawing criticism from the Jacobins. As a result, he conspired with the enemy and plotted to march on Paris in an attempt to overthrow the National Convention. However, this failed, and he surrendered to the Austrian army in April 1793. フランス革命期の将軍。1792年にジロンド派内閣の外務大臣を務めた後，北部軍の指揮官となる。バルミーとジェマップの戦で勝利し，一時ベルギー，オランダにまで侵攻したが，93年3月に敗北を喫し，ジャコバン派から批判された。そのため敵と内通し，国民公会を打倒しようとして逆にパリへの進軍を企てた。しかしこれに失敗し，93年4月，オーストリア軍に投降した。亡命先のロンドンで客死。【小井高志】
