Japanese: 生田川説話 - いくたがわせつわ

This is a tale about Chinnuotoko and Uhara Soshi, who are involved with Unaiotome of Ashiya in Settsu Province. The place name "Katsuta" appears in Volume 9 of the "Nihon Shoki." It is also written about in the "Manyoshu" (Volume 9, 1801-1803, 1809-1811, Volume 19, 4211-4212), and has been widely known since ancient times. In Chapter 147 of the "Yamato Monogatari," the tale is given further detail and specifics, including a scene in which the Empress and other ladies-in-waiting recite shoji uta (traditional Japanese screen poems) in the harem of Emperor Murakami, and a follow-up story about the Virgin's Tomb.

摂津国葦屋の菟原処女（うないおとめ）をめぐる陳奴壮士（ちぬおとこ）と菟原壮士の説話。《日本書紀》巻九に〈活田〉の地名がみえる。《万葉集》(巻九･1801～1803,1809～1811，巻十九･4211～4212)にもうたわれており，古くから広く知られている。《大和物語》147段では，さらに詳しく具体的になり，村上帝の後宮において中宮をはじめ女房たちが障子歌をよむ場や，処女塚（おとめづか）の後日譚がつく。
