A small pictorial symbol that symbolizes a program or file type. The word comes from the Greek icon, which means image. Operating systems with GUI environments, such as Microsoft Windows and MacOS, use icons to allow users to operate them intuitively and easily. By selecting and clicking an icon displayed on the screen with the mouse, you can run application software or open a file. Many application software displays frequently used functions and shortcuts, such as "save" and "print," as icons. Icons were first used by Apple Computer in MacOS, released in 1984, and then were adopted by Microsoft Windows 95, released in 1995, causing them to become popular overnight. → Related topics Object-oriented Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
