A small pictorial symbol that symbolizes a program or file type. The word comes from the Greek icon, which means image. Operating systems with GUI environments, such as Microsoft Windows and MacOS, use icons to allow users to operate them intuitively and easily. By selecting and clicking an icon displayed on the screen with the mouse, you can run application software or open a file. Many application software displays frequently used functions and shortcuts, such as "save" and "print," as icons. Icons were first used by Apple Computer in MacOS, released in 1984, and then were adopted by Microsoft Windows 95, released in 1995, causing them to become popular overnight.

プログラムやファイルの種類をシンボル化した小さな絵記号。画像を意味するギリシア語イコンからきた言葉。Microsoft WindowsやMacOSなどGUI環境を備えたオペレーティングシステムは，アイコンを用いることによりユーザーが直感的に分かりやすく操作できるようにしている。画面に表示されているアイコンをマウスで選択しクリックすることにより，アプリケーションソフトを実行したりファイルを開いたりすることができる。アプリケーションソフトの中でも，よく使う〈保存〉や〈プリント〉などの機能やショートカットをアイコンとして表示しているものが多い。アップルコンピューターが1984年に発表したMacOSに初めて採用され，さらに，1995年に発売されたマイクロソフトのWindows 95に採用されたことでいっきに普及した。
