A perennial aquatic plant of the Scrophulariaceae family. It grows in shallow, still water areas of rice paddies and swamps, and in marshes. It has a slight fragrance. Its underground stems grow 10-20 cm long in the mud. Pinnately lobed leaves grow in whorls at each node of the aquatic stem. Reddish purple sessile flowers appear in the leaf axils from summer to autumn.

ゴマノハグサ科の多年生の水草。水田や沼の浅くて水が動かないところや,湿地に生じる。わずかに芳香がある。長さ 10~20cmで泥中に地下茎が伸びる。水中茎の各節に羽状に裂けた葉が輪生する。夏から秋に,紅紫色の無柄の花が葉腋につく。
