Meyerbeer
German composer. He was immensely popular in Paris as a leading figure in French Grand Opera during its heyday. He grew up in Berlin, trained as an opera composer in Italy, and then moved to Paris in the mid-1820s. His first French opera, Robert le diabolique (premiered in 1831), was a huge success at the Opera, and he went on to produce Les Huguenots (premiered in 1836), Les Prophets (premiered in 1849), and Les Africaines (premiered posthumously in 1865). His brilliant stage effects took the world by storm. →Viola d'Amore
