German composer. He was immensely popular in Paris as a leading figure in French Grand Opera during its heyday. He grew up in Berlin, trained as an opera composer in Italy, and then moved to Paris in the mid-1820s. His first French opera, Robert le diabolique (premiered in 1831), was a huge success at the Opera, and he went on to produce Les Huguenots (premiered in 1836), Les Prophets (premiered in 1849), and Les Africaines (premiered posthumously in 1865).
