Social History Debate (English: Shè huì shǐ lùn zhàn)

Japanese: 社会史論戦 - しゃかいしろんせん（英語表記）Shè huì shǐ lùn zhàn

A debate fought from 1928 to the mid-1930s over the nature of Chinese society and the stage of development of Chinese history. The failure of the Chinese Revolution in 1927 deeply disappointed intellectuals, and at the same time sparked debates over how to define the current state of Chinese society, the nature, object, driving force, and future of the Chinese Revolution, and how to divide Chinese history into periods. The debate was mainly carried out in magazines such as New Thought (Pan Dongzhou, Wang Xuewen - Communist Party faction), Power (Yan Lingfeng, Ren Shu - Trotskyist faction), New Life (Tao Xisheng), Forward (Chen Gongbo), and New Moon (Hu Shi), culminating in the publication of four "Special Issues on Social History Debate" (1931-33) by Reading Magazine (Wang Lixi, Hu Qiuyuan), but was halted when the magazine was discontinued following the Fujian People's Government Incident, and later reignited as the Debate on the Nature of Rural Society.

1928年から30年代半ばにかけ中国社会の性質，中国史の発展段階をめぐって戦わされた論争。1927年の中国革命挫折は知識人に深い失望をもたらすと同時に，中国社会の現状をどう規定するか，中国革命の性格，対象，原動力，前途はどうか，いかに中国史を時代区分するか，についての論争を呼び起こした。論争はおもに《新思潮》(潘東周，王学文――中共派)，《動力》(厳霊峰，任曙――トロツキー派)，《新生命》(陶希聖)，《前進》(陳公博)，《新月》(胡適)などの雑誌上で行われ，《読書雑誌》(王礼錫，胡秋原)が4回も〈社会史論戦特集号〉(1931‐33)を出して最高潮に達するが，福建人民政府事変による同誌の廃刊で中断，のちに農村社会性質論戦として再燃する。
