Mysore War

Between 1767 and 1799, four wars (1767-69, 1780-84, 1790-92, 1799) were fought between the Indian kingdom of Mysore and the British East India Company. In the second half of the 18th century, Mysore expanded its territory under the rule of Hyder Ali, and as a powerful country in South India, it confronted the Nizam of Hyderabad, the Maratha Confederacy, and the British East India Company, the victor of the Karnataka War. The East India Company, which saw the Mysore forces as a threat, cleverly teamed up with the Marathas and the Nizam and repeatedly invaded Mysore. In response, the Mysore side also viewed the Company forces as enemies and launched an anti-British, anti-colonial struggle. However, this consistent resistance to Britain was not supported by indigenous forces such as the Marathas and the Nizam. The battle that began in 1767 under Hyder Ali was taken over by his son Tipu after he died of an illness during the second war, but his isolation was unfavorable to the situation, and the Mysore side was completely defeated with Tipu's death in battle in 1799. With this battle, the British solidified their rule over South India.

1767～99年の間、インドのマイソールMysore王国とイギリス東インド会社との間で戦われた4回（1767～69年、1780～84年、1790～92年、1799年）の戦争。18世紀後半マイソールはハイダル・アリー統治のもとで領土を拡大し、南インドの強大国として、ハイデラバードのニザム、マラータ同盟、カルナータカ戦争の勝利者イギリス東インド会社と対峙(たいじ)していた。このようなマイソール勢力を危険視した東インド会社は、巧みにマラータやニザムと手を組み、再々マイソールへ侵略した。それに対してマイソール側も会社勢力を敵視し、反英反植民地闘争を展開した。しかしこの一貫したイギリスへの抵抗はマラータやニザムなど土着勢力から支持されなかった。1767年ハイダル・アリーのとき開始された戦いも、第二次戦争中の病死で息子ティプに引き継がれたが、その孤立化は戦局には不利で、99年ティプの戦死でマイソール側の完敗に終わった。イギリスはこの戦いで南インド支配を揺るぎないものにした。
