Paper for writing. During the Heian period, when large amounts of paper began to be consumed by the upper classes, the quality of paper became even more important in order to write poetry beautifully, and it became the subject of aesthetic values. Among them, dyed paper from the Nara period was formalized as colored paper, and by combining the techniques of flowing paper, which allows for beautiful and thin papermaking, with dyeing techniques, a wide variety of paper developed as art and crafts, including paper with patterns such as Uchigumori (Uchigumo), Tobikumo, and Ramonshi, processed paper using gold and silver sand, cut foil, and Noge, and patched paper using techniques such as suminagashi, cut and tsugi, toritsugi, and lapsing. These are also related to the development of calligraphy, and many masterpieces remain to this day.
