Amami woodcock (English spelling: Scolopax mira)
Charadriiformes, Scolopacidae. Endemic to Japan. Total length about 36cm. Similar to the Woodcock, but slightly larger, with slightly longer legs. The head is pale brown with white brows, a thin blackish brown eye line, and four blackish brown horizontal bands from the top of the head to the back of the neck. The back and upper surfaces of the wings have a complex mottled pattern of brown, black, and white. The chest to belly has a dull white background with fine brown horizontal stripes. It breeds from Amami Oshima to Tokunoshima in the Amami Archipelago, and is distributed as a resident bird. It also lives in the Ryukyu Islands and the Daito Islands in winter, but breeding has not been confirmed. It lives in forests, and can also be seen in fallow fields and marshes. (→Waders)
