A bird of the Weaverbird family. Wingspan 7cm. Sexes are the same color, with a reddish-brown head and brown back with black spots. Widely distributed in central and southern Eurasia. In Japan, they are resident birds and can be seen near houses all over the country. They build nests under eaves or tiles, but sometimes in tree holes or birdhouses. They live in large flocks in bamboo groves from autumn to winter. They eat rice during the harvest season, but eat large amounts of insects during the breeding season from spring to summer, and weed seeds from autumn to winter. A closely related species is the New Zealand sparrow. In Europe, house sparrows are more common around houses. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
