…In the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, it flourished as the capital of the Scythian kingdom of Neapolis, and had contacts with Greek colonies on the Black Sea coast. It later became the Tatar fortress of Kermenchik, and in the 15th century became a Tatar town called Ak-Mechet'. Modern-day Simferopol was founded in 1784 as a Russian colony adjacent to Ak-Mechet. …
