A mass of rock that has been separated from its parent rock and transported to its present location by the movement of a glacier. In the early 19th century, the origin and transport of large rock masses over great distances in the Alps became a major issue [de Saussure: 1786, Gruner: 1806, De la Beche: 1831, Charpentier: 1835]. Playfair was apparently the first to describe glacial transport [Playfair: 1802, Charlesworth: 1957, Flint: 1971]. Source: Asakura Publishing Dictionary of Petrology Information |
