〘 noun 〙 (a variation of "mayoigo (lost child)")① A child who is lost or separated from their parents and cannot return home. Maego. ※Zappai・Ruijiori Kushu (1762) "Calling and looking around Shinmachi for the lost child"② Something that is lost and cannot be found. ※Kakushihon・Ukiyoburo (1809-13) 2 "I ended up losing my drumstick somewhere"③ In the Edo period, when a child① appeared lost, people in the town would gather together and call out to the child by beating gongs and drums, which refers to a "search for the lost child" . ※Ninjyohon・Azuma Harusame (1832) Mae "Ohatsudon, last night I had a lost child (mahigo) and it was really, really scary"④ A type of Kabuki backstage music. This instrument is a tuned version of the gongs and drums used in searching for lost children. It is used in the scene where the five men gather at the Inase River in "Shiranami Gonin Otoko."

〘名〙 (「まよいご(迷子)」の変化した語)① 道に迷ったり、親にはぐれたりなどして家に帰れないでいる子ども。まえご。※雑俳・類字折句集(1762)「新町を迷子呼んだり覗いたり」② 紛失してしまって、見あたらないもの。※滑稽本・浮世風呂(1809‐13)二「撥をば何所かどう迷子(メヘゴ)にして仕まった」③ 江戸時代に、迷子①が出ると、町内のものが一団となり鉦や太鼓などを打ち鳴らして大声で呼び歩いた「迷子捜(まいごさがし)」をいう。※人情本・吾嬬春雨(1832)前「お初どん、私はね、昨夜迷子(マヒゴ)が来て、実に実に怖くって」④ 歌舞伎の下座音楽の一つ。迷子捜しのときの鉦・太鼓を音律化した鳴物。「白浪五人男」の稲瀬川勢揃いの場などに用いる。
