Kikuchi Keigetsu

Japanese:
Kikuchi Keigetsu

Japanese painter. Born in Nagano Prefecture. His real name was Hosono Kanji. He initially studied under Kodama Katei, but his family opposed his decision to become a painter, so he ran away in 1896 (Meiji 29) to Kyoto and studied under the Nanga painter Utsumi Yoshido. Eventually, through his teacher's arrangement, he became a student of Kikuchi Hobun of the Shijo school, and married Hobun's eldest daughter Aki, inheriting the family business. In 1998, he exhibited at the New and Antique Art Exhibition and won an award, and at the first Bunten exhibition in 1907 (Meiji 40), his work "Spring Warmth" won an award. He exhibited at every Bunten exhibition thereafter, winning awards, and in 1918 (Taisho 7), he became a judge. In 1912, he traveled to Europe, and returned to Japan the following year. In 1925, he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1934 (Showa 9), he became an Imperial Household Artist. He also taught the next generation of artists at the Kyoto Municipal Painting College and served as its principal from 1910 to 1936. In 1974, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy.

Based on the classical techniques of Yamato-e painting, he added new ideas to his unique style, which exudes a romantic charm amidst tranquility, and is known for works such as "Guto", "Ohagurotonbo", "Ritsujo", and "Minamihateruma". The sculptor Kazuo Kikuchi is his eldest son.
