... There are about 4,000 species of the Dytiscidae family known from around the world, and about 100 species in Japan, most of which are aquatic and carnivorous. For this reason, they are also called water beetles or predacious diving beetles. Many species live in stagnant water such as ponds and swamps, or in mountain streams, but some species live in special environments such as coastal tide pools and groundwater.
