[1] 〘名〙 大きな橋。また、大きなほうの橋。⇔小橋(こばし)。※万葉(8C後)九・一七四二「級照(しなて)る 片足羽川(かたしはがは)の さ丹塗りの 大橋(おほはし)の上ゆ」[2] 大きい橋の名称として、または正式の名称のほかの通称として用いられる。[一] 近世初期、江戸城大手門の堀にかかっていた橋。のち常盤橋と称された。※慶長見聞集(1614)一「御城の大手の堀に橋ひとつかかりたり。〈略〉是をは大橋と名付たり」[二] 東京都、隅田川にかかる両国橋の通称。※随筆・事蹟合考(1772)四「万治二年はじめて大橋一ケ所かけられたるもの、今の両国橋なり」[三] 東京都、隅田川にかかる新大橋の通称。※咄本・鹿の子餠(1772)尻端折「よくば早く大橋(オオハシ)へ廻りませう」
