French sculptor. Born in Saulieu, the son of a furniture maker. After working in a marble craftsman's workshop and studying architecture, sculpture and copperplate engraving at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, he went to Paris in 1874. While working on architectural decorative sculpture, he studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris at night, and began exhibiting at the Salon around this time. After working as an assistant to Sorcier and Felguière, he served as an assistant to Rodin for 15 years. He came into the limelight as a sculptor when he exhibited "Polar Bear" at the Salon d'Automne in 1922.
