Trade between Japanese and foreign merchants took place within the settlement. The Ansei Five-Nation Treaty concluded by the Edo Shogunate in 1858 (Ansei 5) stipulated that the walking area for foreign residents was limited to a 10-ri (10 ri) square area around the open port, which meant that foreign merchants' activities were largely confined to the settlement, and trade was basically conducted between Japanese and foreign merchants within the settlement. This settlement trade continued under the unequal treaties, but after negotiations for treaty revision with Great Britain were concluded in 1894, revised treaties were signed with other countries, and the settlement was abolished in 1899, and settlement trade also disappeared.
