A city in northern Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1992. It is located on the Shimousa Plateau and was part of the early modern Sakura Nanamoku area, which was developed in the Meiji era. The surrounding area is a peanut-producing region. Yachimata tea is produced here, and dairy farming is also thriving. Bordering the northeast of Chiba City, large-scale residential development began around 1960, and the population has been increasing rapidly since 1990. The Sobu Main Line runs through the city. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 74.94 km2 . 73,212 people (2010).
