A city in northern Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1992. It is located on the Shimousa Plateau and was part of the early modern Sakura Nanamoku area, which was developed in the Meiji era. The surrounding area is a peanut-producing region. Yachimata tea is produced here, and dairy farming is also thriving. Bordering the northeast of Chiba City, large-scale residential development began around 1960, and the population has been increasing rapidly since 1990. The Sobu Main Line runs through the city. 千葉県北部の市。1992年市制。下総(しもうさ)台地上にあり,近世の佐倉七牧の一部で,明治時代に開拓された。付近はラッカセイ産地。八街茶を産し,酪農も盛ん。千葉市の北東に接し,1960年ころから大規模な宅地開発が進み,人口は1990年から急激に増加している。総武本線が通じる。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。74.94km2。7万3212人(2010)。
