Under the medieval manor system, taxes were levied on catches in addition to official duties. In Hokuriku countries along the Sea of Japan, such as Sado and Echigo, and in provinces such as Izu, Ise, and Settsu, taxes were collected in various forms, such as in kind, processed goods, and currency, according to the season, as tsukina (green herbs) and setchiryo (fees). In the early modern period, taxes were levied as small labor and floating labor. Taxes were levied in return for the right to occupy and use fishing grounds, and included sea tax, sailor labor, net labor, boat labor, and sea labor. At first, taxes were paid in kind, but from the middle period onwards, taxes were paid in rice and silver. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
