Djibouti is the capital and port city of the small country of Djibouti, located in northeastern Africa on the Gulf of Aden. Its population was 317,000 (1991). The city's importance lies in its strategic location controlling the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Gulf of Aden with the Red Sea, and in the fact that it is the starting point of a railway line to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Its international airport is just as important as its port. Its main industries include shipbuilding, ship repair, construction materials, food processing, and salt production. There are also economic activities appropriate to a desert region, such as a camel market. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
