A measure proposed by the Roman Church in medieval Europe that prohibited all fighting by lords and knights for a certain period of time. Because conflicts between knights, lords, and kings often involved the church and caused great damage to the urban and rural population, the church proposed this measure in 1027 and it was promulgated as canon law at the Lateran Council in the 12th century, with violators being excommunicated. It is noteworthy that it also included protections for non-combatants, church buildings, and agricultural products, making it a forerunner of modern international law in wartime. Truces were set from Wednesday evening to Monday morning, and on church holidays and the day before. This was particularly prevalent in France, where central power was weak.
