A type of river regulating structure. Unique to Japan, its origins can be traced back to the Nara period. Basically, it is made by arranging pile-like members into a triangular or square pyramid shape, and is named after its shape, which looks as if it has two horns. There are many types, such as the ushiwaku, seigyū (also called hijiriushi), and inoko (illustration). They are mainly installed in alluvial fan rivers where the riverbed is made of gravel or stones, making it difficult to drive piles into the ground. To prevent the river from being washed away, they use weights such as long, woven bamboo or iron wire baskets filled with stones (called gabion).
