Ushabti (English spelling)

Also called shawabti. A small figurine used as a funerary accessory in ancient Egypt, believed to perform corvée labor in place of the deceased. They can be made of stone, wood, ceramic, or even ivory. Sometimes only one figurine was buried with the deceased, but sometimes 365 figurine were buried with the deceased, one for each year. シャワブティともいう。古代エジプトで死者に代って賦役労働に従事すると信じられていた副葬品の小人形。石製，木製，陶製，まれには象牙のものもある。1個だけ副葬する場合もあるが，1年分 365個を副葬したものもあり，トゥトアンクアメンのもののように人物彫刻として美術的にすぐれた作品もある。
