Ushabti (English spelling)
Also called shawabti. A small figurine used as a funerary accessory in ancient Egypt, believed to perform corvée labor in place of the deceased. They can be made of stone, wood, ceramic, or even ivory. Sometimes only one figurine was buried with the deceased, but sometimes 365 figurine were buried with the deceased, one for each year. Some, such as that of Tutankhamun, are artistically excellent human sculptures.
