Phong Saly

Japanese: ポンサリ（英語表記）Phong Saly

The capital of the province of the same name, in the northernmost part of Laos, surrounded by Vietnam to the east and China to the north and west. Population: about 2000. Located in a mountainous plateau, it is a strategic location in the valley basin of the Nam Ou River, a tributary of the Mekong River, and was considered strategically important even during the civil war. It is about 30 km in a straight line from the Chinese border, and a road (120 km) was completed in 1963 connecting it to Mengla, Yunnan Province. The inhabitants are mostly Lao and Tibetan-speaking Pu Noi people, who grow corn on the narrow sloping land and also cultivate small rice fields.

ラオス最北端，東をベトナム，北から西を中国に囲まれた同名省の省都。人口約2000。山岳高原地帯にあり，メコン川の支流ナムウー川の河谷盆地に開けた要衝で，内戦時代にも戦略上重要視された。中国国境からは直線距離にして約30kmで，1963年には雲南省勐臘（もうろう）と結ぶ道路(120km)が完成した。住民はラオ族とチベット語族系のプーノイ族が多く，狭い傾斜地でトウモロコシを作り，小さな水田も開いている。
