Wheatstone Bridge

A bridge circuit used for precise measurements of electrical resistance. If a circuit is made by connecting resistors of sizes _R1 , _R2 , _R3 , and _R4 in order, and a battery is connected between the _R1 - _R4 contact and the _R2 - _R3 contact, and a galvanometer is connected between the _R1 - _R2 contact and the _R3 - _R4 contact, no current will flow through the galvanometer when _R1 / _R4 = _R2 / _R3 . If only the value of _R1 is unknown, _R1 can be measured by adding or subtracting the other known resistances to establish this relationship. There is also a Kohlrausch bridge that uses this principle to measure the resistance of an electrolyte solution.

電気抵抗の精密測定などに用いられるブリッジ回路。大きさR₁，R₂，R₃，R₄の抵抗を順につないで回路をつくり，R₁・R₄の接点とR₂・R₃の接点の間に電池をつなぎ，R₁・R₂の接点とR₃・R₄の接点の間に検流計をつなぐと，R₁/R₄＝R₂/R₃のとき検流計に電流が流れない。R₁の値だけが未知なら他の既知抵抗を加減しこの関係を成立させればR₁を測定できる。この原理を利用し電解質溶液の抵抗を測るコールラウシュ・ブリッジもある。
