Kyoto Guard

...They were called "Goshinpei." The Meiji government established the first Imperial Guard as a direct military force in February 1868 (Meiji 1), and in leap April, the system of the Kyoto Guard was established with contributions from each domain, but this system was abolished in February of the following year, and the Imperial Guard only had about 400 Imperial Guards, including those from Totsukawa. After the capital was moved to Tokyo, the Choshu domain's soldiers were in charge of guarding the Imperial Palace, but in December 1870, Yamagata Aritomo persuaded Saigo Takamori, who was in Kagoshima, to establish Imperial Guards with contributions from the three domains of Satsuma, Choshu, and Tosa, and in February of the following year, an order was issued to establish Imperial Guards with contributions from four infantry battalions and four artillery units of the Satsuma domain, three infantry battalions of the Choshu domain, and two infantry battalions, two cavalry platoons, and two artillery units of the Tosa domain.

…〈御親兵〉と呼ばれた。明治新政府は1868年(明治1)2月にはじめて政府直属軍としての親兵を設置し，閏4月に各藩の献兵による京都警衛隊の制が定められたが，この制は翌年2月に廃止され，十津川郷士などの約400人の親兵を有したにすぎなかった。東京遷都後の皇居警衛には長州藩兵があたっていたが，70年12月山県有朋は鹿児島にいた西郷隆盛に薩･長･土3藩の献兵による親兵創設を説き，翌年2月，薩摩藩歩兵4大隊･砲隊4隊，長州藩歩兵3大隊，土佐藩歩兵2大隊･騎兵2小隊･砲隊2隊の献兵による親兵設置が令せられた。…
