…Poets of the 1920s, such as Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), Osvaldo de Andrade (1890-1954), and Manuel Bandeira (1886-1968), promoted artistic radicalism in particular. In the 1930s, novelists from the northeast, such as Jorge Amado, Graciliano Ramos (1892-1953), and José Lins do Rego (1901-57), emerged, addressing social problems in the region in a style that was more colloquial than regional. The forerunner of these writers was Euclides da Cunha, whose Revolt in the Interior (1902) turned the attention of Brazilian cultural figures and intellectuals to domestic issues, but the 1930s was a period of political radicalism in Brazil, and these writers were not immune to this.
