The main island of American Samoa in the South Pacific. Also known as Tutuila Island. A volcanic island, it is long and narrow from east to west, with many inlets, and the excellent port of Pago Pago in the center of the southern coast. The capital is Pago Pago. Fishing is thriving, and there is a fish processing plant in Pago Pago that produces canned tuna and frozen fish. Area 135 km2 . Population 57,254 (2000).
