…歌舞伎から出た語であるが，現代では一般の演劇から映画･テレビなどの用語にもなっている。ただし，一般演劇では〈舞台装置〉，映画･テレビなどでは〈セット〉という語の同義語として使われるが，歌舞伎本来の大道具とはもっと範囲が広く，〈引幕〉〈回り舞台〉〈セリ〉など劇場常備の舞台機構も含まれ，道具の作製と飾りつけや機構の操作を受けもつ職業を〈大道具師〉〈大道具方〉または〈道具方〉と呼んでいる。　初期の歌舞伎は能舞台をそのまま模したような舞台で，演目も単純な一幕物ばかりだったから，大道具も簡単であったが，脚本が進歩して多幕物が発達し，演出も複雑になるにともなって，それまで舞台装置に類するものを担当していた大工職が独立し，専門の大道具師が生まれた。…
