...the political system that followed the Second French Republic from the accession of Napoleon III in December 1852 until its collapse in September 1870 after the defeat of the French in the Franco-Prussian War; it was opposed to the First Empire (1804-14) of Napoleon I.

Louis Napoleon, president of the Second Republic, dissolved the parliament in a coup on December 2, 1851, and became Emperor Napoleon III on December 2, 1852, thus establishing the Second Empire. The Second Empire can be divided into three periods: the Autocratic Empire (1852-58), the Free Empire (1859-69), and the Parliamentary Empire (1870).
