Crown of honour

… According to the Nihon Shoki, the crown established under the crown system had a top that was gathered together to make a bag-like shape and had a brim, so it was probably worn over the topknot and tied from the top. These crowns were differentiated according to rank, with the colors purple for the virtue crown, blue for the benevolence crown, red for the ceremony crown, yellow for the faith crown, white for the justice crown, and black for the wisdom crown. Later, in 647 (Taika 3), the crowns that had previously been made of ashiginu were changed to two types, brocade and silk, and four types of crowns, the woven crown, embroidered crown, purple crown, and brocade crown, were made of brocade, while the blue crown, black crown, and Kenmu crown, were made of silk, with a different sash from the crown on the brim and a cicada-like ornament on the back covered with lacquered ra. …
