An insect of the Lepidoptera order, Pyralidae family. This moth has a span of about 17 mm, and the leading edge of the male's forewings is covered with black scales, which look like a lump, hence the Japanese name. The larvae are pests of Poaceae plants such as rice, wheat, and barnyard millet, and appear four times a year in warm regions and twice a year in cold regions. In warm regions, they overwinter as mature larvae in the form of pupae, but in cold regions, they overwinter as larvae. They live in rice and other plant leaves by stitching them together, and eat the outer epidermis and mesophyll, causing the affected leaves to become translucent. Damage can be seen from the nursery stage, but the damage is greatest during the heading stage in summer, and if they occur frequently, rice yields can decrease.
