Born January 15, 1850 in Botosani, Moldova Died: June 15, 1889, Bucharest. Romanian poet. He studied in Vienna and Berlin in his youth, and after returning to Rome, he published lyric and philosophical poems with a strong romantic flavor, in which deep disillusionment, a sense of emptiness and the joy of life intermingled, despite his poverty. He was revered as the greatest Romanian national poet. However, due to financial difficulties and the pain of a broken heart, he went insane in 1883 and ended his life as an invalid. His representative works include poems such as Imparat şi proletar (1874), Cǎlin (Cálin), Strigoii (Ghosts) (76), Scrisoarea III (81), Luceafǎrul (Venus) (Luceafǎrul) (83), the fantastic philosophical novel Sǎrmanul Dionis (72), and original folk tales. He also wrote political and social commentary. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
