An industrial city in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the southeast of Brazil. Facing the Paraiba River, it is located about 108 km in a straight line from the state capital, Rio de Janeiro. Population: 219,988 (1991). The city began to develop after President Vargas established Brazil's first national steelworks in the city in 1941, and it became the center of Brazil's steel industry, and a metallurgical engineering college was also established there.
