An industrial city in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the southeast of Brazil. Facing the Paraiba River, it is located about 108 km in a straight line from the state capital, Rio de Janeiro. Population: 219,988 (1991). The city began to develop after President Vargas established Brazil's first national steelworks in the city in 1941, and it became the center of Brazil's steel industry, and a metallurgical engineering college was also established there. ブラジル南東部，リオ･デ･ジャネイロ州の工業都市。パライバ川に面し，州都リオ･デ･ジャネイロ市から直線距離で約108kmの地点にある。人口21万9988(1991)。1941年バルガス大統領によってブラジルで初めて国立製鉄所が市内に設立されてから市の発展が始まり，ブラジルの製鉄業の中心となり，冶金工業専門学校もつくられた。そのほか非金属工業，食品加工，化学などの工場が多い。【山田睦男】
