Just as the acidity of an aqueous solution is expressed by pH, which is defined by the hydrogen ion concentration (or more precisely, activity), slags should be defined as those with a high oxygen ion concentration as basic slags and those with a low oxygen ion concentration as acidic slags. However, due to theoretical limitations of the measurement principle, basicity is often defined as the ratio of the basic oxide concentration to the acidic oxide concentration for convenience. In general, it is said that the order of oxides from basic to acidic is Na ₂ O, CaO, MgO, _{MnO, FeO, Fe 2 O 3} , Al ₂ O ₃ , TiO ₂ , B 2 O ₃ , SiO ₂ , and P ₂ O ₅ .
