Date of birth and death unknown. A 6th century monk and translator from North India. His Sanskrit name was Bodhiruci. He was also called Douki and Kakuai. In 508 (Yongping 1), he came to Luoyang and lived at the Yongning Temple, where he worked on translation. He translated 39 volumes and 127 volumes, including the Treatise on the Ten Stages of Teaching, the Entering into the Lankavataka Sutra, the Diamond Prajnaparamita Sutra, and the Treatise on the Sutra of Immeasurable Life. He also translated Donmusai's Mahayana Yizhang into Hu and sent it to the Western Regions. Later, he was considered the founder of the Jiron sect, and was also revered as one of the founders of Pure Land Buddhism because he bestowed the "Amida Sutra" on Donluan and translated Vasubandhu's "Amida Sutra Commentary." A monk from roughly the same era as Bodhidharma, Ruci hated him and there is a legend that he and his disciple, the monk Koto (Eko, 468-537/538), plotted to poison him to death.
