Japanese: イノベーション（英語表記）innovation

A central concept in J.A. Schumpeter's theory of economic development, it refers to the actions of entrepreneurs who change the combination of production factors such as labor and land or introduce new production factors in order to expand production, and is translated as innovation or new ideas. Although it is sometimes used to mean technological innovation, innovation does not only refer to changes in production technology but also includes the development of new markets and new products, the acquisition of new resources, the reform of production organizations, and the introduction of new systems. Schumpeter believes that innovation stimulates investment demand and consumption demand, creating new economic booms, and therefore innovation is the most leading factor in economic development.

J.A.シュンペーターの経済発展論の中心的な概念で，生産を拡大するために労働，土地などの生産要素の組合せを変化させたり，新たな生産要素を導入したりする企業家の行為をいい，革新または新機軸と訳されている。技術革新の意味に用いられることもあるが，イノベーションは生産技術の変化だけでなく，新市場や新製品の開発，新資源の獲得，生産組織の改革あるいは新制度の導入なども含む。シュンペーターはイノベーションにより投資需要や消費需要が刺激され，経済の新たな好況局面がつくりだされるのであり，したがってイノベーションこそ経済発展の最も主導的な要因であるとしている。
