An industrial city on the Sea of Japan at the southern tip of North Hamgyong Province, North Korea. Its port was opened in 1899. The city stretches from north to south along the east coast with Mount Hakkudō in the background, while the rural areas occupy the eastern foothills of the Mateonryeong Mountains. The city's Seongjin Steelworks is part of the North Hamgyong Coastal District, a metal industry base centered on iron, and produces the only special steel in North Korea. Kim Chaek was the name of a Korean People's Army commander who died in the Korean War, and in 1951 his birthplace, Seongjin City, was renamed Kim Chaek City in honor of his achievements.
