Machine production can be broadly divided into two parts: parts processing and product assembly. Automating the product assembly process is called automatic assembly. While automation of parts processing has been promoted from early on to improve productivity and quality, automation of assembly has lagged behind for several reasons, including the fact that product design did not take automatic assembly into consideration and that assembly is done individually for each product, which means that quantities cannot be assembled in large quantities and is therefore unprofitable. However, in recent years, with the development of assembly machines, peripheral equipment, and control devices, and the demand for labor saving, automatic assembly has finally been introduced.

機械生産は大別すると部品加工と製品組立ての二つよりなる。製品組立ての工程を自動化することを自動組立てという。部品加工の方では生産性の向上と品質改善のための自動化が早くから進められてきたが，組立ての方は，製品設計が自動組立てについてあまり考慮をしていなかったこと，組立ては製品別になり，個別的になるため，数量がまとまらず採算性が悪いこと，などの理由により自動化が遅れていた。しかし近年になり組立機械，周辺機器，制御装置の発達と省力化の要請により，ようやく自動組立てが導入されるようになった。
