Deltatheridium

Japanese: デルタテリディウム（英語表記）Deltatheridium

A genus of mouse-sized mammal with a skull length of 3.5 cm that was discovered along with dinosaur fossils in a Late Cretaceous layer in Mongolia (about 78 million years ago). The chewing surface of the molars in the upper jaw is triangular, and the number and shape of the teeth indicate that it is a primitive mammal. It was once thought to be the oldest of the eutherians (placental animals) and was once included in the insectivores, but it also has strong similarities to metatherians (marsupials). It is currently considered to be an intermediate stage between eutherians and metatherians, and is included in the third extinct lineage that is neither eutherian nor metatherian.

モンゴルの白亜紀後期の地層(約7800万年前)から恐竜の化石とともに発見された，頭骨長3.5cmのネズミ大の哺乳類の1属。上顎（じようがく）の臼歯の咀嚼（そしやく）面が三角形をしていて，歯数や歯の形態から原始的な哺乳類とされる。かつては正獣類(有胎盤類)の最古のものと考えられ，食虫類に含められたこともあるが，後獣類(有袋類)との類似性も強い。現在は，正獣類と後獣類の中間段階のものとして，正獣類でも後獣類でもない，第3の絶滅した系統の群に含められている。
