A passerine bird of the family Weaverbird (illustration). Its total length is about 12 cm, and including the male's reproductive tail feathers, the total length is about 32 cm. Sexes are heterochromatic. The male's reproductive plumage is black on the head and from the back to the tail, with the back of the neck, face and belly being white, and there are large white spots on the wings. The beak is red. A unique feature is its long tail, the four central feathers of which can grow to 16-20 cm. The non-reproductive plumage of males and females is yellowish brown with scattered dark spots. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, living in savannas and cultivated areas. It eats seeds.
