Owaraitake mushroom - Owaraitake mushroom

Japanese: オオワライタケ - おおわらいたけ
Owaraitake mushroom - Owaraitake mushroom

A poisonous mushroom of the family Cardinalaceae, order Matsutake, belonging to the Basidiomycetes. Its overall color is deep golden or brownish yellow. It grows in clusters of 20-30 at the base of the trunks of dead broadleaf trees, forming large groups weighing over 1 kilogram. The cap is 5-15 cm in diameter, has a dry surface with radial fibrous patterns, and has yellow flesh and a very bitter taste. The gills are yellow to rust-colored. The stem is 5-15 cm long, 1-3 cm thick, and has a brim at the top. It grows from summer to autumn. It is found in Japan and other parts of the world. It is a type of hallucinogenic poisonous mushroom that stimulates the nervous system and causes the so-called 'Kuraitake' symptoms. The poisonous components have yet to be identified, but the toxicity is not very strong.
