Stephanocyathus spiniger

Japanese: アシナガサンゴ(英語表記)Stephanocyathus spiniger
Stephanocyathus spiniger
A coelenterate (cnidaria) of the family Chordatidae in the class Anthozoa. A solitary coral with six thick spines protruding from the bottom. It is found on the seafloor at depths of 150 to 400 meters south of central Honshu. The coral's body is hexagonal, with long, thick spines radiating out from the base of each corner to support the body, giving it a unique shape. The inside of the capsule is divided by many partitions, with the partitions arising from the six corners protruding the highest upwards. Small granules are developed on the sides of each partition.
