Year of death: 18th October 1667 (3rd December 1667) Year of birth: February 28, 1596 (March 26, 1596) A feudal lord in the early Edo period, and lord of Kokura Domain in Buzen Province (Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture). His childhood name was Harumatsumaru, and his first name was Tadamasa. He was a Daigaku-no-kami (Grand Master of the University), Ukon no Shogen (General of the Right), and Chamberlain. He was the second son of Ogasawara Hidemasa, and his mother was the daughter of Matsudaira Nobuyasu. He was born in Koga, Shimousa Province (Ibaraki Prefecture). In 1615, he lost his father and older brother in the Summer Siege of Osaka, and inherited Matsumoto, Shinano Province, a fief of 80,000 koku. In 1616, he was transferred to Akashi, Harima Province, with 100,000 koku, and in 1632, he was given 150,000 koku in Kokura, Buzen Province, and in 1662, he was ordered to command the security of Nagasaki, becoming a key player in the shogunate's control of Kyushu. In 1662, he built Fukuju-ji Temple, founded by Ingen's disciple Sokuhi Nyoichi, and made it his family temple. His conversion to the Obaku sect is probably indicative of his literary tastes, which sought to absorb Ming (Chinese) culture. <References> “Kitakyushu City History” (Chizuru Fukuda) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
