Shikimic Acid - Shikimisan

( 3R , 4S , 5R )-trihydroxy-1-cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid _{. C7H10O5} (174.15). It was found in the fruits of Illicium religiosum , hence the name. _It is distributed in many plants together with quinic acid. Colorless needles. Melting point 190-191 °C. 1.599. -157° (methanol). λ _max 213 nm (ε 8.9 × ¹⁰³ ). pK _a 4.15. Shikimic acid is produced in plants together with quinic acid by cyclization of heptose derivatives, and is an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of aromatic compounds. _LD50 1000 mg/kg (mouse, peritoneal).
