Year of death: August 4, 1758 (September 5, 1758) Year of birth: 1680 An author of tangihon (discussion books) from the Edo period. His real name was Ito Han'emon. Born into a merchant family in Ishimachi, Edo, he practiced haiku in his youth and was a Kikakumon scholar under the pseudonym Santo. During the Shotoku era (1711-16), he lived in seclusion in the village of Aoyagi near Hachioji, where he practiced medicine. As early as 1750 (Kan'en 3), he was apparently acquainted with Seikanbo Ko'a, the founder of tangihon (discussion books) in the narrow sense, who lived in the Ushijima area of Mukojima, Edo at the time. In 1752 (Horeki 2), the same year as Ko'a's Tosei Shita Dangi (Discussion on the Imperfect World), he published Kyoukun Miscellaneous Nagamochi (A Treasure of Learning and Miscellaneous Long Boxes), a little later. He also wrote Sento Shinwa (New Stories about the Public Baths), and published a total of five tangihon (discussion books). Alongside Ko'a, he pioneered tangihon (discussion books) in the narrow sense and established its style. (Yoko Kashiwazawa) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
