A canal in the western part of the Russian Federation, connecting the Moscow River and the Volga River. Until 1947 it was called the Moscow-Volga Canal. It travels north from Moscow's northern port, crosses the Klin-Dmitrov Hills, and continues north to the Volga River near the city of Dubna. It is 128 km long. There are several reservoirs along the way. In the northern half, between Dubna and the Klin-Dmitrov Hills, water from the Volga River is pumped up and allowed to flow naturally towards Moscow. Construction took place from 1932 to 1937. Items transported on the canal include timber, building materials, stone, oil, food, and industrial products.
