Karl [II] - Karl
King of the West Frankish Kingdom (reigned 840-877), Western Roman Emperor (reigned 875-877). Also known as King der Kahle the Bald. Youngest son of Louis the Pious. Divided the kingdom in the Treaty of Verdun in 843, and acquired the West Frankish Kingdom. Divided Lotharingia (Lorraine) with his second brother, East Frankish King Louis II, in the Treaty of Mersen in 870. Troubled by the rise of local nobles, he succumbed to the Norman invasion and paid tribute. In 876, he invaded the East Frankish Kingdom, but was defeated.
