Homespun - Homespun (English spelling)

Originally, it was a woolen fabric made using thick, unevenly spun woolen yarn that was hand-spun, woven into a coarse, plain weave on a hand loom, and finished without fulling. This gives it a simple feel, which has made it popular with many people. Today, to resemble this texture, it is woven on a power loom using thick, machine-spun yarn that is spun to an uneven fineness and has an elegant feel. The texture of this fabric is very similar to tweed, so it is often confused with the two. The only difference is that tweed is a twill weave, while homespun is a plain weave. Applications include women's coats, suits, sportswear, and interior decorations.

もともと手紡の、繊度の不ぞろいになった太い紡毛糸を使い、粗く平織に手織機で製織し、縮絨(しゅくじゅう)せずに仕上げた紡毛織物であった。そのため素朴な味があり、多くの人々に愛用されてきた。現在ではこの風合いに似せて、繊度を不ぞろいにし、雅味をもたせて紡いだ太番手の機械紡績糸を使い、力織機で織ったものである。この織物の風合いは、ツイードとよく似ているため、混同されることが多い。というのも、ツイードの場合は斜文(しゃもん)織であるのに対し、ホームスパンは平織であるということが違っているにすぎない。用途は、婦人コート、背広、運動服、室内装飾品などである。
